Technical Specifications:
The system automatically detects licking behavior, including lick count per bottle, total lick duration, licking frequency, number of licking bouts, and total licks per bout.
SOP:
1. Launch Software:Double-click the VisuVogelTestt icon to open the software. Select “Open Experiment” to continue a previous session, or “New Experiment” to start a new one.
2. Enter Experiment Info:Click “New”, input the experiment name, choose a save path, and confirm.
3. Set Up Serial Port:Click “Next”, select the correct COM port, and ensure the software confirms a successful connection.
4. Device Check:Click “Device Detection” to check channel status. Green lights indicate proper function; red lights may suggest loose power connections.
5. Group Assignment:Click “Next” and use “+” to add experimental groups (e.g., A, B) for organizing animal subjects.
6. Configure Parameters:Click “Next” to adjust experiment duration and settings. Default bottle settings are recommended unless specific changes are needed.
7. Start Experiment:Click “Next”, then right-click a trial to begin single-channel testing, or select “Start All” to launch multiple channels simultaneously.
8. System Check & Precautions:Before testing, use a conductive rod to touch the two metal pins (blue frame) and metal plate to confirm response in the software. Then carefully install water bottles.
Important: Do not spill water on green connectors, as it may cause false readings.
Set the data refresh rate to verify system stability before beginning the experiment.

The sucrose preference test is primarily used to assess anhedonia, a core symptom of depression, by measuring an animal’s preference for a sweetened solution over water. It is widely applied in preclinical research to evaluate depressive-like behavior, screen the efficacy of antidepressant treatments, and study the impact of chronic stress or early-life adversity on reward-related behavior. Additionally, it is used in models of neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, as well as in neurogenetic and circuit-level studies involving optogenetics or transgenic animals. The test also finds applications in aging and neurodegenerative disease models to investigate motivational deficits.
